Are You A Mystical Being?

Are You A Mystical Being?

We know that we are physical beings. We know that we are relational and psychological beings. But how connected are we to the reality that we are mystical beings?

What do we mean by mystical being? Our mystical being is the part of us that connects to wonder and awe. Our mystical being accepts the presence of mystery, does not need everything explicitly explained, and understands that there are true realities connected to both what we can see and what we cannot see.

Is 2022 the Year for Better Boundaries?

Is 2022 the Year for Better Boundaries?

We are all separate people. This is easier or more difficult for people to accept, but it’s true. It is not until we recognise our separateness and the separateness of everyone else, especially our closest family members, that we can become connected intimately in a healthy way.

The 'Best' Life For Us

The 'Best' Life For Us

We all believe there is a ‘best’ life for us. Whether it’s a financial goal, an educational aspiration, or a desire for a healthy intimate relationship, we all have those elements which we believe will complete our ‘best’ life. Thoughtful living and healthy thinking patterns will, without a doubt, aim us in the direction of that ‘best’ life and keep us moving toward it at a steady pace.

It's Christmas... Like it Or Not

It's Christmas... Like it Or Not

Everyone loves Christmas. Or do they?

Typically, Christmas holds memories from the past that remind us of something wonderful. We come to expect that Christmas should be happy and magical because it was happy and magical in our memories. Perhaps we remember the presence of loved ones now gone. Or the beauty of lovely lights softened by a snowfall. Maybe it is just that family spent time together. People came home. There was laughter, surprise, and feasting.

What Is Human Integrity?

What Is Human Integrity?

The dictionary defines integrity as the state of being unimpaired; soundness.

We know integrity when we see it. We know the people who have it. We also know, consciously or unconsciously, when we make a decision for integrity over the easier way, the lazier way, the "nobody will know" way. We should have a well developed moral compass that distinguishes between "nobody will care if I skip the mustard in this recipe" and "I just made twenty dollars because that teenager selling Christmas wreathes gave me the wrong change".

The Problem With Gratitude

The Problem With Gratitude

We hear from many sources that gratitude brings huge benefits to our mental health. In the Backpack programs and courses, we encourage participants to examine those things for which they are grateful.  However, there is a difference between sincerely felt gratitude and what can amount to a quick, surface exercise that cannot be  experienced below the surface. Should we feel guilty because we cannot FEEL our gratitude? No. That’s not it. But let’s try to slow things down so that we can feel gratitude more deeply.
